Alan Belcher Brands GFL a ‘Scam’ Following Debut Show Cancellations

Alan Belcher has joined the growing number of fighters who are upset with the Global Fight League (GFL) for cancelling its first events. Many are wondering if the promotion will ever actually launch.

Belcher, a former champion in BKFC heavyweight division, had signed with GFL and was scheduled to fight Stuart Austin in Los Angeles on May 24 and 25. However, GFL abruptly cancelled these shows. Founder Darren Owen stated that the cancellation was due to the primary investor failing to provide the necessary funds.

Owen mentioned in his statement that he still intends to launch GFL in the future, but also allowed fighters to request to be released from their contracts immediately. While Belcher didn`t explicitly say he asked for a release, his comments suggest he is very unhappy with the situation.

“GFL is cancelled, guys,” Belcher announced on Instagram. “I feel sorry for those who booked flights. Even though tickets may not have been sold, some supporters changed their plans and booked flights to Los Angeles to watch my fight.”

“It really seems like a scam, to be honest. There was no proof that fighters would be paid as promised. We all got cheated in this situation.”

Despite the uncertainty around GFL’s future, reports say Owen is trying to move forward. Belcher revealed that he was asked to participate in the debut event without a guaranteed payment.

“He is still trying to make the fight happen,” Belcher explained. “I spoke with Darren recently, and he offered me a share of the revenue instead of a guaranteed fight purse if I would still fight.”

In his social media post, Belcher tagged several promoters, including Mams Taylor of Misfits Boxing and David Feldman, the founder of BKFC, hinting at a new fight announcement soon.

Belcher was among many experienced fighters who signed with GFL when it was announced in 2024. However, concerns about the promotion`s stability grew as the debut show faced repeated delays.

Ultimately, the initial two events were announced and then cancelled within weeks, leaving the actual launch of GFL in serious doubt.
