Patchy Mix, the former Bellator bantamweight champion, has become the most high-profile free agent currently in the realm of combat sports.
His release was officially secured after the PFL announced on Tuesday that they mutually agreed not to extend his contract. This decision effectively makes him available to explore new fighting opportunities.
“Professional Fighters League and Patchy Mix have mutually agreed to not extend his contract,” PFL officials stated in a press release on Tuesday. “We both decided this is the best course of action for PFL and him.
“Patchy is a fantastic fighter and we wish him well. PFL is excited to crown our next 135 pound champion in the PFL World Tournament.”
This announcement brings an end to a prolonged situation that unfolded over several months. Mix had publicly expressed frustration regarding inactivity, particularly after a planned fight against Leandro Higo in November was canceled. Following that cancellation, Mix formally requested his release from the PFL.
Since then, Mix continued to voice his displeasure concerning his time away from competition. His last fight was in May 2024, where he defeated Magomed Magomedov in a rematch.
That victory marked Mix’s seventh consecutive win and improved his overall professional record to 20-1.
Unfortunately, due to the significant layoff that led to his request for release, Mix did not have the chance to extend his winning streak or defend his Bellator title again. It now appears that the fighter and the promotion have reached a joint decision to part ways.
It is highly probable that the UFC will show immediate interest in signing Mix, considering he is arguably the top bantamweight outside of their current roster. Mix trains in Las Vegas and works alongside the reigning UFC bantamweight champion, Merab Dvalishvili. He has also consistently expressed a strong desire to join the UFC.
With his departure from the PFL confirmed, it seems this long-awaited opportunity to potentially join the UFC might finally materialize for Patchy Mix.
