Bo Nickal is handling the first defeat of his UFC career with a positive attitude.
His initial MMA loss occurred last weekend at UFC Des Moines, where Reiner de Ridder stopped him in the co-main event. Many found this loss surprising due to Nickal`s reputation as a highly-touted prospect, but Nickal views it as a beneficial moment for his development.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Nickal described the experience as intense, leading to significant self-reflection. He admitted to feeling deeply disappointed and frustrated immediately after the bout. However, he expressed gratitude for his strong value system and the guidance he`s received, stating that the loss hasn`t altered his fundamental goals or self-perception.
While acknowledging his dislike for losing, he said it`s unfortunate but also something he can draw strength from. He noted that previous losses in his career have often served as crucial turning points, and he already feels thankful for this recent experience. He sees it purely as a chance to learn, gain experience, and ultimately grow stronger and improve.
Although the defeat was unexpected for many observers, Nickal maintained that he recognized de Ridder as a significant challenge and made sure not to underestimate “The Dutch Knight” during his fight preparation. According to Nickal, the real issue was his relative lack of experience at such a high competitive level.
Nickal stated he felt extremely confident leading up to the fight, believing he had completed all necessary preparations for victory. He felt physically and mentally ready. However, upon reflection after the event, he admitted his preparation wasn`t as complete as he initially thought. He realized there were numerous aspects he could have improved beforehand or approached differently.
He explained that accurately predicting every scenario or anticipating fight developments is difficult for him because he lacks the extensive experience and exposure to diverse fighting styles that come with many years of competition. He specifically noted that some of de Ridder`s key strengths demonstrated in the fight were aspects he was not adequately prepared to counter.
As a decorated collegiate wrestler (three-time NCAA Division I champion and one-time runner-up), Nickal was hailed as one of the most promising newcomers in MMA when he switched over in 2021. He further amplified the excitement with bold statements about his aspirations and capabilities. This outspoken confidence sometimes alienated people, leading many fans and fighters to express satisfaction at his defeat, referring to it as a dose of “humble pie.” Yet, Nickal insists he wouldn`t alter his approach or statements.
“I stand by everything I`ve said and done,” Nickal stated. “My self-belief is absolute, and I will always back myself. I don`t believe my identity is tied to winning or losing. While I`ve won frequently and lost rarely, neither wins nor losses define who I am. I possess an unwavering self-confidence that remains regardless of circumstances. People are free to say what they wish, and results will vary, but I will consistently wake up driven to pursue my objectives and give my utmost effort daily.”
“My confidence in my skills remains completely intact,” he added, “and this defeat only serves to intensify my motivation.”
Regarding his next steps, Nickal hasn`t finalized any specific plans but is eager to compete again soon to move past the feeling of defeat.
“On the return trip, I discussed it with Coach Mike Brown, expressing my desire to fight again immediately,” Nickal recounted. “However, I plan to consult further with the coaching staff to determine the optimal course of action. I need to ensure I`m fully recovered and ready to undergo a full training camp, but I hope to compete a couple more times this year. Therefore, returning to action relatively quickly would be beneficial for me.”
