The FIA has officially approved General Motors (GM) as a Formula 1 power unit supplier, starting from the 2029 season. This approval is for the new Cadillac F1 team.
The GM-backed team, which received approval to join the F1 grid earlier this year, is set to debut in the 2026 season. For their initial three years in the sport (2026-2028), their engines will be supplied by Ferrari.
General Motors is entering Formula 1 in collaboration with the US-based group TWG Motorsports.
From 2026 onwards, the Formula 1 grid is expected to expand to 11 teams, coinciding with the introduction of new technical regulations designed to potentially alter the competitive landscape.
Russ O`Blenes, chief executive of the Cadillac entry, commented on the development: “With this approval from FIA, we will continue to accelerate our efforts to bring an American-built F1 power unit to the grid.”
This significant step means that Formula 1 will feature six distinct engine manufacturers starting in 2029. General Motors will join Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda, Red Bull Powertrains-Ford, and Audi as a power unit supplier.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem highlighted the importance of this decision: “Over two years ago, the FIA approved the entry of an 11th team into the FIA Formula One World Championship, guided by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunity to our sport.”
He added, “Although the process was at times challenging, the progress we see today affirms the journey has been worthwhile.”
Welcoming GM, he stated, “Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors.”
Ben Sulayem concluded, “Their dedication to innovation, sustainability, and competition is fully aligned with the FIA`s vision for the future of our sport. It also strengthens our commitment to making motorsport more accessible and inclusive worldwide-welcoming new manufacturers, advancing technology, and connecting with a broader, more diverse fanbase.”
