Cadillac`s new Formula 1 team is currently engaged in advanced discussions with several potential drivers for their inaugural season in 2026, according to Team Principal Graeme Lowdon.
Cadillac is set to join the F1 grid as the 11th team. This initiative is a collaboration between American automotive giant General Motors and TWG Global, an entity with various sports investments, including stakes in Chelsea and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The confirmation of two new seats opening up on the F1 grid has led to a significant number of “very good drivers” contacting Cadillac to express their interest since the team`s entry was confirmed in March, Lowdon noted.
Prominent drivers such as Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, both winners of multiple races, are speculated to be among the leading candidates. Additionally, former Sauber driver Zhou Guanyu and Aston Martin`s reserve driver, Felipe Drugovich, have also been mentioned in connection with a possible seat.
In a recent discussion from the team`s UK base at Silverstone, Lowdon expressed satisfaction with their knowledge of the available driver pool. This includes both promising talents advancing from Formula 2 and experienced veterans with extensive Formula 1 careers. He mentioned that they are in continuous contact with these drivers and frequently spend time in the paddock.
Lowdon stressed that their primary focus has been on the crucial task of developing the car. He highlighted that having a competitive vehicle ready for their debut in Melbourne is paramount. However, he confirmed that they are indeed making progress in talks with several drivers, though no announcements are expected during the Silverstone weekend. He advised keeping an eye out for future updates.
Addressing Valtteri Bottas`s Social Media Post
Regarding Valtteri Bottas`s recent social media activity, where he posted a photo next to a Cadillac road car with the playful question “Do we like this seat?”, Lowdon responded with a touch of humor, suggesting it merely indicated Bottas had purchased a Cadillac. He explained that the team feels fortunate to have a diverse range of skilled drivers to evaluate. The team also benefits from having a different timeline compared to established teams, allowing them ample time to ensure they select the most suitable lineup. They hope their final driver pairing will generate excitement among fans and encourage support for the new team on the grid.
Embracing the Challenge: Starting from the Back
Reflecting on the significant challenge of competing in Formula 1, Lowdon, who previously held a management position with the Manor/Marussia team (2010-2015), described the sport as “super difficult” and “intensely competitive.” He acknowledged that the upcoming regulatory changes will affect all teams, but emphasized the realistic expectation that any new team entering F1 typically starts at the rear of the grid. Their clear objective, he stated, is to move forward. Lowdon believes that with the backing of TWG and Cadillac, they possess the necessary components, vision, and ambition to progress, while remaining fully aware of the inherent difficulties involved.
Concerning the countdown to their first race weekend in Melbourne (March 6-8), Lowdon mentioned a countdown clock visible in every office, illustrating the team`s focused awareness of the timeline. He confirmed that the team is on track and has already conducted extensive wind tunnel testing for their 2026 car concept.
