In a recent court decision, Cain Velasquez, the former UFC heavyweight titleholder, learned his fate. His sentence is notably less severe than what prosecutors had initially sought.
Earlier this week, the MMA star was handed a five-year prison term. This sentencing follows his no-contest plea in April to multiple charges including attempted premeditated murder, aggravated assault, and various firearm offenses. These charges originated from his 2022 arrest.
The arrest in February 2022 was a result of Velasquez pursuing a vehicle in a high-speed chase. The vehicle contained Harry Goularte, who was accused of sexually assaulting Velasquez`s son at a daycare operated by Goularte`s mother. During the chase, Velasquez discharged rounds from a .40 caliber handgun at the vehicle. One of the bullets struck Paul Bender, Goularte’s stepfather, in the arm, causing non-life-threatening injuries. The California State District Attorney had requested a sentence of 30 years to life imprisonment for Velasquez.
Velasquez will receive credit for the time he has already served in custody.
