After a three-year legal process, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been sentenced following his arrest in 2022.
On Monday, Velasquez received a five-year prison sentence, accounting for time already served. This sentencing comes after he pleaded no-contest to charges related to a February 2022 incident. Velasquez engaged in an 11-mile high-speed pursuit of a vehicle occupied by Harry Goularte, who was accused of molesting Velasquez’s son at a daycare run by Goularte’s mother. During the chase, Velasquez fired multiple shots from a .40-caliber handgun at the vehicle, wounding Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, in the arm.
Judge Arthur Bocanegra delivered the sentence, crediting Velasquez with 1,283 days served, including time in jail and under house arrest. This means the 42-year-old will spend less than two additional years in prison.
The news of Velasquez`s sentencing has sparked widespread reaction from fighters within and outside the UFC, as well as from MMA fans and readers.
