The Formula 1 European season takes a short break as the sport returns across the Atlantic to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been a regular fixture on the F1 calendar since 1978, making it F1`s longest-standing venue in North America. It`s known for hosting exciting and dramatic races.

McLaren arrives in Canada in a strong position in both championships, having secured their second one-two finish of the season in Spain.

Oscar Piastri`s fifth win of 2025 extended his lead in the Drivers` Championship over teammate Lando Norris to 10 points. Reigning champion Max Verstappen is now 49 points behind after a penalty in the previous race. McLaren`s lead over Ferrari in the Constructors` Championship is significant, standing at 197 points after Ferrari moved into second place ahead of Mercedes and Red Bull.

This weekend is crucial for Max Verstappen, who has won the last three Canadian GPs, to keep his title hopes alive. Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari, a seven-time winner at this circuit, will be looking for a strong performance to boost his season.

The F1 Academy series will hold its fourth round in Montreal, featuring three races after the cancellation of the previous event in Miami due to heavy rain.

Situated on the artificial Notre Dame Island, the circuit is named in honour of Canadian racing legend Gilles Villeneuve, father of the 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve. Its high speed and ample overtaking opportunities make it a driver favourite.

The 2.71-mile track is particularly demanding on brakes, with key heavy braking zones before the first chicane, the Turn 10 hairpin, and the final chicane at the end of the long back straight. The proximity of walls and barriers adds to the challenge throughout the lap.

Even after successfully navigating most of the lap, the notorious Wall of Champions awaits at the exit of the final chicane, ready to punish even minor errors before the main straight. It earned its name after the 1999 race where former champions Jacques Villeneuve, Damon Hill, and race leader Michael Schumacher all crashed there.

Montreal Weather Forecast

While rain has often featured at the Montreal race weekend, the current forecast for this year predicts pleasant weather with sunny intervals.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-20s Celsius.
