Cejudo Believes Khabib’s Influence Could Be Delaying Makhachev vs. Topuria

According to Henry Cejudo, Khabib Nurmagomedov might be the reason behind a potential delay in the highly anticipated fight between Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria.

Earlier this year, Topuria announced his plans to move up to the lightweight division and challenge for a second title, hinting at an immediate title shot. While fans were excited about this possibility, Makhachev appeared less enthusiastic. Cejudo suggests that Khabib`s perspective might be the key factor here.

Cejudo recounted a conversation with Khabib, where Khabib expressed that it wouldn`t be fair for Topuria to jump the line for a title shot, especially considering Makhachev`s own journey and his willingness to grant former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski two title opportunities. Cejudo believes Khabib might insist that Topuria first prove himself against a top lightweight contender.

“Khabib indicated that if Ilia defeats a No. 1 contender, then a title fight would be considered,” Cejudo explained. He added, “Personally, I think Islam is willing to fight anyone, anytime, anywhere, as his reputation at the PI suggests. However, I believe Khabib Nurmagomedov is more likely to intervene and advocate for Topuria to face the top contender first. Therefore, my prediction is that we`ll see Justin Gaethje versus Islam Makhachev at International Fight Week.”

Makhachev currently holds the record for the longest active reign as lightweight champion in the UFC and recently surpassed the record for most lightweight title defenses. However, critics point out that two of his title defenses were against Alexander Volkanovski from a lower weight class. This is why Makhachev prefers Topuria to first establish himself in the lightweight division before a title fight. Cejudo even proposed a potential opponent for Topuria.

“I think the UFC might match Ilia Topuria against Dustin Poirier in Louisiana,” Cejudo speculated. He also mentioned Charles Oliveira`s reluctance to fight Topuria unless he`s champion, suggesting Oliveira might lack leverage in this situation. Cejudo concluded, “If a fighter refuses to fight someone for a title shot after already having lost their opportunity, the UFC might sideline them. So, a fight between Ilia Topuria and Dustin Poirier seems plausible.”

Cejudo humorously noted, “Dustin Poirier mentioned he only wants to fight legends in his retirement fight, and Ilia Topuria recently declared himself a ‘Legend.’”
