Charles Oliveira Doesn’t See Ilia Topuria ‘as a Big Fight,’ Topuria Responds

Charles Oliveira is currently focused on securing fights against the highest-profile opponents and does not consider Ilia Topuria to be in that category.

In a recent interview, Oliveira discussed his next potential matchup as he waits for his next fight to be scheduled. “Do Bronx” is coming off a victory against Michael Chandler at UFC 309, which earned him the Fight of the Night award, and he remains a top contender in the lightweight division, where Islam Makhachev is the current champion.

Oliveira and Makhachev previously fought at UFC 280, where Makhachev won by submission in the second round. Oliveira is eager for a rematch with Makhachev for the title. Topuria, the current featherweight champion who is expected to move up to lightweight soon, has mentioned the possibility of fighting Oliveira to earn a chance to face Makhachev. However, Oliveira is not interested in this fight.

Oliveira explained that while many names are being discussed, his priority is to fight for the title, which is currently held by Islam Makhachev. He acknowledged Topuria as a strong and respectable fighter.

However, Oliveira stated that he does not currently see a fight with Topuria as a major step towards his goal of regaining the championship. He believes a fight with Makhachev is necessary to achieve that goal.

Oliveira also recently commented that he believes he could defeat the undefeated Topuria by knockout if they were to fight.

It is unclear exactly which of Oliveira`s recent statements provoked Topuria, but “El Matador” responded to Oliveira on social media with strong words, telling Oliveira to “stay quiet.”

Topuria`s response included reminding Oliveira of his record of 10 losses, highlighting that Topuria is currently a champion while Oliveira is a contender. Topuria asserted his position and dominance in the division.

Topuria aims to become a champion in two weight classes. He has an undefeated record of 8-0 in the UFC, including recent knockout wins against featherweight legends Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski.
