Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who initially finished fifth and sixth respectively, were both disqualified for car irregularities. This resulted in Ferrari leaving Shanghai with no points.
Hamilton`s disqualification was due to excessive wear on the plank under his Ferrari, a similar issue that cost him second place at the 2023 United States GP when driving for Mercedes.
Craig Slater explains the disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc from the Chinese GP.
Leclerc and Pierre Gasly, initially 11th, were disqualified for their cars being underweight, specifically 1kg below the 800kg limit.
Leclerc sustained front wing damage early in the race after a minor collision with Hamilton. Although the damaged wing was replaced with a standard one by FIA, the car remained underweight.
Ferrari Reacts to Disqualifications
Ferrari statement following the disqualifications:
“Charles was on a one-stop strategy today, leading to high tyre wear and consequently, an underweight car.
“Regarding Lewis’ skid wear, we slightly miscalculated the consumption. There was no intention to gain an unfair advantage.
“We will learn from today`s events to prevent similar errors in the future. This is not how we wanted our Chinese GP weekend to conclude, for ourselves or our devoted fans.”
The Chinese GP start saw Charles Leclerc`s front wing damaged after contact with Lewis Hamilton.
