World No. 4 Coco Gauff commented on her 7-5, 6-1 victory over Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals of the Madrid tournament.
“I`m happy that I won, happy with my game. The first set wasn`t easy; it was a nervous battle,” Gauff was quoted by the WTA press service. “Andreeva is a talented young tennis player, and I`m sure many more exciting matches await us.”
The American also discussed the turning point in the match against Andreeva.
Asked what changed in the match after being down 4-5, 15-40, saving two set points, and then winning eight consecutive games:
“I didn`t change anything at all during the match. I had break points before that too; if I had converted them a bit earlier, maybe I would have been serving for the set myself at that score.
Yes, she started making more errors, but I continued doing the same thing. It`s just that more rallies started playing out the way I needed them to. And I didn`t change anything because I was doing many things correctly from the start; it was just that Mirra was hitting aces and great drop shots,” Gauff said at the press conference.
