World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev discussed his preparation for the tournament in Madrid.
During his training session with Karen Khachanov, an observation was made regarding the high number of service breaks. Medvedev was noted to be losing his serve frequently, falling behind in games like 1-4 and 0-3, though he still managed to win sets, such as 6-4. He was asked how normal this is and if it`s frustrating, especially since holding serve is typically easier on hard courts.
Medvedev explained, “This is clay. In Monte Carlo, we saw that almost everyone was losing their serves, except for those who are already used to this surface and know what to do. For instance, someone like Musetti, and even he was losing sets 6-1.”
“On clay, you have to be ready for this,” he continued. “I got mad during the session with Karen, but I understood that it`s clay – there will be opportunities to come back. And that`s what happened. If we had continued the second set, it would have been the same thing. In Monte Carlo, we had a similar match: I was leading, but I wasn`t particularly upset about losing my serve. You want to win them, but on clay, everything is returned, and the rally just continues.”
Medvedev made these comments in an interview with Evgeny Donskoy for the `Bolshe!` YouTube channel.
