Demetrious Johnson Praises Paddy Pimblett’s Championship Potential

Paddy Pimblett has gained a significant supporter in his pursuit of a championship title.

Demetrious Johnson, widely recognized as the flyweight GOAT, shared his admiration for Pimblett in a recent YouTube video. Johnson analyzed some of Pimblett`s previous victories, highlighting his potential. Pimblett is scheduled to face Michael Chandler this Saturday as part of the UFC 314 co-main event in Miami`s Kaseya Center.

Johnson went so far as to suggest that Pimblett has the potential to reach the very pinnacle of the UFC lightweight division.

“I genuinely believe that one day he will become champion,” Johnson stated. “If he doesn`t achieve championship status, he`ll be remembered as an exceptional fighter who just missed the top, similar to figures like Urijah Faber or Joseph Benavidez. Currently, at this stage of his career and as seen in his fight against King Green, he is doing everything correctly.”

Johnson`s analysis focused on Pimblett`s triangle choke submissions against Alexis Savvidis in 2018 and King Green at UFC 304 in 2024. These fights showcased Pimblett`s impressive grappling skills.

Johnson emphasized that Pimblett`s strengths go beyond mere toughness (Pimblett has never lost by knockout in his 25 professional fights). He possesses a technical prowess that his opponents have struggled to counter.

“Many people underestimate Paddy`s journey to this point,” Johnson commented. “Paddy has faced criticism regarding his fighting style because he absorbs a lot of strikes. However, one of Paddy`s most admirable qualities is his unwavering commitment in every fight. Whether he`s in a difficult situation or dominating, he consistently brings intensity. He displays diverse attacks and is highly skilled when he competes.”

Pimblett aims to extend his UFC record to 7-0 with a victory over Chandler this Saturday. He is coming off consecutive wins against experienced fighters Green and Tony Ferguson. Johnson appreciates that Pimblett has maintained his approach as he faces increasingly challenging opponents.

“He fought with the same style back in 2018,” Johnson noted. “His fight against Green was in 2024, demonstrating that Paddy Pimblett has always fought this way. People often focus on his outspoken personality, weight fluctuations, and other aspects, but he is adept at creating scrambles, gaining advantageous positions, and securing submissions.”

“If he faces Michael Chandler, and Chandler lands a couple of strikes, pushes him against the cage, and takes him down, Pimblett will be actively seeking opportunities to utilize his jiu-jitsu skills and attempt a submission.”

Johnson`s endorsement adds significant weight to Pimblett`s championship aspirations, highlighting the skills and potential that many observers might overlook.
