Diego Lopes Addresses Defeat to Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 314

Despite a valiant effort against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 314, Diego Lopes did not secure the featherweight title. However, the rising star is far from discouraged after battling for five rounds with Volkanovski, widely considered a legend in the 145-pound division.

In just his second year in the UFC, Lopes headlined his first main event and delivered a compelling performance against Volkanovski. Throughout the five rounds, Lopes landed significant strikes but ultimately lost by unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 in favor of Volkanovski.

Lopes took to social media on Sunday to briefly comment on the outcome of the fight.

“Always keeping my head up and a smile on my face,” Lopes stated. “Last night, I came up short and made some mistakes. I’m committed to getting back to training, correcting those errors, and moving forward. Thank you for all the support. As I always say, “NOTHING HAPPENS.”

Lopes’ performance was commendable, earning him a Fight of the Night award alongside Volkanovski. Volkanovski also achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first fighter over 35 to win a title in a UFC division 155 pounds or lighter.

While Lopes appeared to start cautiously in the first round, which is unusual for his typically aggressive style, he shifted gears in the second round. He stunned Volkanovski with a powerful punch, briefly knocking him down.

From that point onward, Lopes relentlessly fought Volkanovski for control of the octagon, landing numerous impactful blows, evidenced by Volkanovski`s visibly bruised face after the fight.

Despite losing on the scorecards, Lopes respectfully acknowledged Volkanovski`s victory in his post-fight octagon interview.

“It was an honor to share the octagon with Alexander Volkanovski,” Lopes admitted. “But I will return. He is incredibly experienced in the UFC. I can feel myself improving. I’m going to get better, come back, and become a champion.”
