World No. 10 Emma Navarro shared her perspective on discussions about her family`s financial status. Her father, Ben Navarro, is a billionaire and owns the tournaments in Charleston and Cincinnati.
Emma says: `I try not to read anything – not comments, not articles. I`m not aware of what the fans are saying. Sometimes, of course, headlines pop up mentioning that my father is a billionaire, and that`s a fact. But my childhood wasn`t easy or privileged in terms of effort.
We grew up in a normal, even strict environment. I remember getting up at six in the morning on Saturdays to go to the court. From childhood, we were taught to be persistent, hardworking, set goals, and live a meaningful life. That`s why I really dislike being defined as `so-and-so`s daughter with such-and-such a fortune`. That label really bothers me.`
