Former coach of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Jorge Aguirre, shared his thoughts on his separation from the Spanish tennis player.
– What happened between you and Alejandro?
– There`s no simple answer; we never had any conflicts. We parted ways at the Rome tournament last year and haven`t spoken since. I prefer not to comment on the specifics. Alejandro is an exceptional player, and I am certain he can enter the Top 10 this season.
– It seemed like you would always be together.
– I thought so too, as if we were meant to achieve great things together. But sometimes external circumstances intervene that are beyond control.
– How did you deal with the split?
– It was difficult. I`m not new to challenges and know how to handle difficulties, partly thanks to my understanding of psychology. But something like this isn`t quickly forgotten. This project lasted 14 years: starting with a boy who had a complex character and reaching World No. 21.
– Why didn`t you continue working together for at least another year?
– I was confident that within a year we would break into the Top 10, as were many others. I wouldn`t be surprised if in a couple of months Alejandro climbs to, say, ninth. But the real question is, will he manage to remain in the top ten for five years? That`s hard to predict.
– The issue of consistency is relevant even for Alcaraz.
– Carlos isn`t always consistent, but he is the leader of the Race to Turin. For me, he is the best player on the Tour. Maintaining peak form throughout the entire season is incredibly challenging. There are always moments – be it a bit of stress or physical discomfort.
– But Sinner managed to do it in 2024.
– They are engaged in an equal battle. For me, they are both geniuses, but Carlos possesses talent on a galactic scale.
– Do you see anyone else currently at the same level as them?
– No, right now there`s nobody else on the horizon.
