Former UFC Star Molly McCann Joins Matchroom Boxing

Molly McCann is preparing for a significant change in her combat sports career, transitioning to boxing.

Matchroom Boxing officially announced on Thursday that the former UFC flyweight contender has signed with their promotion. Details regarding her debut fight, including opponent and date, are still pending.

Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn commented on the new signing:

She’s officially signed with Matchroom Boxing. Molly McCann will compete now as a boxer, about time I’d like to say as well. Former [Amateur Boxing Association] champion. Everyone knows the ability as a boxer, obviously been a massive star within the UFC. Built a profile globally as well and we’re delighted to start the journey with her.

— Eddie Hearn

McCann, who is 35 years old, announced her retirement from mixed martial arts this past March following a first-round submission defeat to Alexia Thainara. Competing at flyweight and later strawweight, “Meatball” had a memorable MMA career. She notably captured the inaugural Cage Warriors 125-pound title in 2018 before making the move to the UFC.

Inside the UFC`s octagon, McCann experienced a mix of successes and challenges. She delivered several highlight-reel knockouts, established herself as a popular fighter in her native England, and came close to title contention during a strong 6-2 period from 2019 to 2022. However, a recent downturn with a 1-4 record, including three first-round submission losses, ultimately signaled the end of her tenure with the promotion.
