Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou issued a statement on Tuesday regarding his involvement in a fatal motorcycle accident in his home country of Cameroon. The incident tragically resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl from injuries sustained in the crash.
Reports indicate the accident occurred over the Easter weekend in the Omnisports district of Yaounde, Cameroon. Ngannou was reportedly driving a motorcycle that collided with the young woman. While exact details of the collision have not yet been released, the victim suffered injuries to her arm and leg. Ngannou is said to have promptly transported her to a local medical facility for treatment.
Sadly, despite efforts, the young woman could not be saved and passed away at Yaounde General Hospital.
Ngannou spoke to TMZ Sports, stating, “From the very beginning, I have been by the family’s side, offering support, comfort, and deepest condolences during this time.” He added, “I’ve met with them privately to share in their grief, and I will continue to stand with them every step of the way.”
He further expressed his sorrow, saying, “I carry their pain with me, and my unwavering thoughts and support remain with them as they face this heartbreaking loss.”
Authorities in Cameroon are currently investigating the incident.
Ngannou, aged 38, last competed in October of the previous year, making his PFL debut with a dominant first-round victory over Renan Ferreira. This marked his return to MMA after a break of over two years.
Before his return to mixed martial arts, Ngannou ventured into professional boxing, participating in two high-profile matches against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua following his departure from the UFC as a free agent.
The athlete has also recently faced profound personal loss, having revealed in April 2024 that his 15-month-old son, Kobe, died unexpectedly.
