Gable Steveson, the celebrated Olympic gold medalist wrestler, faced a surprising defeat at the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships. Despite being a strong favorite to secure his third National Title for the University of Minnesota, Steveson was overcome by Oklahoma State`s Wyatt Hendrickson in a close 5-4 match, conceding a late takedown.
This was the first time Steveson had been taken down throughout the entire season.
In a message to supporters on social media, Steveson expressed gratitude to Gopher Wrestling, reflecting on his journey from an 18-year-old to a 24-year-old athlete representing the University. He mentioned his desire to return and bring recognition to the institution, emphasizing the “generational run” and affirming his decision to represent his city.
Steveson acknowledged the unpredictable nature of sports, stating that “bumps in the road” are inherent and valuable learning experiences. He emphasized that his focus has always been on the broader impact he could have on wrestling – increasing its popularity, viewership, and entertainment value – rather than solely on wins and losses.
After his Olympic triumph in 2020, Steveson initially ventured into professional wrestling with WWE but was later released. He then briefly explored football, joining the Buffalo Bills` training camp in 2024, but did not make the final roster. Ultimately, he chose to return to college wrestling for one final season at Minnesota.
Before his defeat by Hendrickson, Steveson enjoyed an undefeated season, adding another Big 10 title to his accomplishments. Hendrickson, an Air Force lieutenant who transferred to Oklahoma State, proved to be a formidable opponent.
Steveson thanked his supporters for their continued encouragement throughout his collegiate wrestling career, appreciating those who engaged with him, regardless of location. He also extended a message to his critics, acknowledging that their attention, even if negative, contributed to the sport`s visibility.
Looking ahead, Steveson has previously expressed his ambition to compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, aiming for a second gold medal. He also has spoken about transitioning to MMA, especially after developing a relationship with UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
