Ilia Topuria, the former UFC featherweight champion, known for his striking prowess, anticipates even greater knockout power as he transitions to the 155-pound lightweight division.
In an interview on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Topuria confidently stated, “At 155, you will see that if I touch someone, they will be instantly knocked out. I won`t even need to hit their chin. A simple touch to the head will be enough to make them explode.”
He further elaborated on his strength at the new weight class, saying, “I feel incredibly powerful and grounded at this weight. If they want to wrestle, I`m ready. No problem. And my stamina is limitless, I have enough energy for five days, not just five rounds.”
Topuria relinquished his featherweight title to compete in the UFC`s competitive lightweight division. He achieved championship status by knocking out Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 in February 2024. Prior to that, he made history at UFC 308 last October by becoming the first fighter to defeat Max Holloway with strikes.
Discussing his permanent weight class change, Topuria acknowledged it as a fresh challenge. When questioned about fighters competing in the wrong weight classes, he emphasized that it’s a matter of individual needs and circumstances.
“It varies. For some, yes, for others, no,” Topuria explained. “I believe some fighters at 145 could potentially compete at 135, like José Aldo, who is smaller in stature. However, he was a long-reigning world champion and one of the all-time greats. Perhaps if he had cut down to 135 earlier in his career, he might not have had the same energy levels.”
