Jon Jones is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in mixed martial arts history. A popular debate among fans and analysts is who else deserves a spot alongside him on the hypothetical “Mount Rushmore” of MMA – representing the sport`s top four athletes of all time.
Jones recently weighed in on this very topic during an interview with Vic Blends on YouTube. While pinpointing “greatness” in MMA is subjective, Jones`s selection isn`t entirely unexpected, and he made sure to include himself in the esteemed group.
“My top four,” Jones stated, “are Demetrious Johnson, Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, and myself. In no particular order. Each of us has achieved incredible things in this sport.”
Jones`s own career achievements are undeniable, including holding the record for the longest reign as UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and recently claiming the UFC Heavyweight title.
Remarkably, Jones has never been genuinely defeated in a professional fight. The single blemish on his official record is a disqualification loss against Matt Hamill, a bout he was otherwise dominating before throwing illegal 12-to-6 elbows.
Georges St-Pierre, another name on Jones`s list, boasts the longest reign as UFC Welterweight Champion with nine consecutive title defenses. He later moved up in weight to capture the UFC Middleweight title by submitting UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping.
While Jones and St-Pierre have impressive title histories, Demetrious Johnson holds the unique distinction of having the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history, successfully defending his flyweight belt 11 straight times, surpassing Anderson Silva`s previous record of 10 defenses.
As for Anderson Silva, Jones revealed a deep respect, referring to the legendary Brazilian former champion as his “idol.” Jones even admitted to still feeling nervous whenever he gets the chance to interact with “The Spider.”
Considering the staggering list of accomplishments these four fighters have amassed throughout their careers, it`s certainly a strong case to be made for Jones`s choices when narrowing down the absolute best to ever compete in the sport of MMA.
