Kamaru Usman achieved his first victory in over three years, demonstrating a return to form at UFC Atlanta.
In a classic display from the former welterweight champion, he neutralized the dangerous striking of Joaquin Buckley in Saturday`s main event by utilizing his wrestling to secure takedowns and maintain control. Buckley`s renowned stand-up offense was rarely a factor as Usman dominated the exchanges on the ground, reminiscent of his performances during his reign.
After largely controlling the fight for four rounds, and navigating a slightly less dominant fifth, an emotional Usman was declared the winner by decision. This victory not only reminded the MMA world of his enduring capabilities but also hinted that the 38-year-old may still have more legendary moments left in his career.
Fellow former champion and podcast host Henry Cejudo was among those who praised Usman`s performance, stating: “What a return. Dominant and victorious. Kamaru Usman is BACK.”
Judging by the broad and positive reaction to Usman’s comeback, Cejudo`s assessment appears to be widely shared across the MMA community.
