Former world No. 1 John McEnroe believes that Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz require new top competitors to emerge in men`s tennis.
McEnroe stated, “It`s an interesting time because we will observe if there are one or two more players capable of reaching this elite level, much like Novak Djokovic did when he aimed to catch up to Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal. His success in doing so demonstrated his caliber as a player. However, there currently seems to be a gap [in challengers].”
Offering his perspective on potential candidates to fill this void, he added, “At this moment, I would wager on either one of [Joao Fonseca – Jakub Mensik] or on Ben Shelton. I feel it would be beneficial and significant if another one or two young athletes could join them at the top. This would be extremely helpful.”
He concluded that the appearance of a third prominent young star would directly challenge the leading positions held by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, thereby elevating their already impressive rivalry to even greater levels.
