World number seven, Mirra Andreeva, recently opened up about the significant effort she`s been putting into developing her serve.
Responding to observations about the noticeable improvement and impressive speed of her serve this year, Andreeva explained that it was a result of dedicated work during the offseason.
“We worked a lot on the serve during the preseason,” she stated. “We focused on the height of the jump, pushing off stronger with the legs, and moving the arm more actively.” She was particularly pleased to see a speed of 197 km/h displayed during a recent match, calling it “pretty cool” and validating the effectiveness of their training.
Contrary to suggestions that she naturally possessed a strong serve, even during her junior career, Andreeva disagreed. “I wouldn`t say it was natural,” she commented. “When I was younger, I was always the smallest, so my serve was absolutely ordinary, average. I could apply spin well, but that was all. I wouldn`t say I served particularly well in juniors.”
Looking towards the future, Andreeva revealed a specific goal regarding her serve speed. Following up on seeing the 197 km/h mark, she was asked if she aims for an even faster speed. Her answer was clear: “I would like to serve well, hit an ace, and see `200` on the scoreboard. That would be one of the goals for me.”
