MMA News: Conor McGregor Hints at Retirement, Artem Vakhitov Turns Down UFC Offer, Cain Velasquez Sentencing, and More

Conor McGregor appears to be signaling the end of his fighting career.

At a BKFC press conference in Florida last Thursday, McGregor strongly implied that his political ambitions are now his main focus, rather than returning to competitive fighting. He mentioned turning down an offer to fight on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, stating he is content with his past achievements and is now pursuing a different path that resonates with him. He added that greatness cannot be rushed.

This “different path” seems to be a bid for the Irish presidency. McGregor, who has been openly critical of the Irish government, particularly regarding immigration policies, has declared his intention to run for President to address these issues.

McGregor has not completely dismissed the possibility of fighting again, despite not competing since suffering a leg injury in a fight against Dustin Poirier in July 2021. He anticipates a massive amount of attention should he decide to return to the sport.

“My comeback will be billed as the greatest and most anticipated comeback of all time, and currently, my focus is on Ireland,” McGregor stated. “It will happen, I’m sure, and it’s always great to be here.”

Public reaction suggests that the welcome for McGregor`s potential return to fighting might not be as enthusiastic as he believes.

Cain Velasquez`s legal ordeal has concluded with a no-contest plea and a jail sentence. Velasquez was targeting a man accused of molesting his son, which has resulted in widespread sympathy from MMA fans and fellow fighters.

Artem Vakhitov, a highly regarded kickboxer with a history with Alex Pereira, has surprisingly declined a UFC Contender Series contract, causing considerable discussion within the MMA community.

Ryan Bader, another former Bellator champion, has parted ways with PFL and become a free agent, further frustrating fans who are seeing well-known fighters leave the league.

UFC Mexico City was a successful event, and many fans shared their opinions on the main event, where Brandon Moreno secured a decision victory over Steve Erceg.
