Patrick Mouratoglou, who coaches Naomi Osaka, offered his perspective on Novak Djokovic`s recent performances on clay courts this season.
Mouratoglou expressed significant surprise regarding Djokovic`s showing at the tournaments in Monte Carlo and Madrid. He clarified that his surprise wasn`t about the level of tennis, but rather the Serb`s apparent attitude and lack of intensity. It struck him that Djokovic seemed to lack the fundamental desire to win in those events.
While acknowledging Djokovic`s undeniable capability to play at a much higher standard (“This is Novak Djokovic,” he stated), Mouratoglou observed that the world number one didn`t appear either physically sharp or mentally invested in the matches. He asserted that for a player of Djokovic`s stature, lacking motivation essentially negates the purpose of competing.
In this context, Mouratoglou believes Djokovic`s decision to participate in the Geneva tournament makes strategic sense. It suggests the intention to recapture some competitive momentum and a winning feeling ahead of the crucial event in Paris. However, Mouratoglou concludes by posing the key question: will this last-minute preparation prove sufficient?
