Nadia Petrova: Medvedev Needs to Focus on His Body After Miami Loss

Former world No. 3 Nadia Petrova has shared her thoughts on Daniil Medvedev`s loss to Jaume Munar in the second round of the Miami Masters, where he was defeated 2-6, 3-6.

“It`s very disappointing to exit the tournament so early,” Petrova commented. “After Indian Wells, Medvedev was clearly struggling with back issues, and he wasn`t at his peak physical condition for the match against Munar. At this high level of competition, where every opponent is motivated to win, it`s incredibly challenging to perform your best when you`re not fully fit. Daniil might have hoped to improve his condition as the tournament progressed, which is sometimes possible. However, Munar played exceptionally well and didn`t allow Daniil to settle into the match and find his rhythm.”

Petrova added, “Now, Medvedev needs to take a step back, consider his physical well-being, work on strengthening his body, put in significant effort, and prepare for the clay court season, which is his least favored surface. Perhaps he`ll surprise us there, or maybe the first half of the season will be challenging, ultimately impacting his year-end ranking.”

Daniil Medvedev on his Miami defeat: “My back was really hurting. It was tough to move.”
