Nassourdine Imavov Named Backup for Du Plessis vs. Chimaev at UFC 319

Nassourdine Imavov, fresh off an impressive victory against former champion Israel Adesanya in February, is getting closer to a title shot. His position as the backup fighter for the UFC 319 middleweight championship main event between Dricus du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev brings him another step closer.

Reports indicate that Imavov has been asked to prepare as the alternate fighter for the event scheduled for August 16th in Chicago.

The UFC frequently designates backup athletes to be prepared in the event that one of the main event participants is unable to compete due to unforeseen circumstances. This practice became more common during the COVID-19 pandemic and is still occasionally used for significant title bouts.

Imavov`s readiness follows his knockout win over Adesanya, extending his winning streak to four consecutive fights. His recent victories also include wins against Brendan Allen, Jared Cannonier, and Roman Dolidze, solidifying his high position in the middleweight division rankings.

His professional record stands at 16 wins, 4 losses, and one no contest. Within the UFC, he has compiled a record of 8 wins, 2 losses, and one no contest.

Despite his strong run, Imavov was aware that Khamzat Chimaev was positioned for the next title shot after his dominant win over former champion Robert Whittaker. However, by serving as the backup, the 30-year-old fighter is now potentially very close to his own chance at a UFC title.

UFC 319 is scheduled for Saturday, August 16th, at the United Center in Chicago. The main card will begin on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET.
