Reinier de Ridder Explains Why He Favors Dricus du Plessis Over Khamzat Chimaev

Reinier de Ridder, the former two-division ONE champion now competing in the UFC, is set for a significant challenge in the co-main event against Bo Nickal at UFC Des Moines. With a current UFC record of 2-0, a win over a prominent prospect like Nickal could considerably elevate his status within the middleweight division and bring him closer to a potential title shot.

As a contender in the middleweight ranks, de Ridder naturally keeps a close eye on the division`s championship landscape, including the anticipated clash between champion Dricus du Plessis and challenger Khamzat Chimaev, expected in 2025. De Ridder offers a unique perspective on this matchup, having trained with both fighters previously.

Sharing his insights, de Ridder explained to MMA Fighting why he leans towards Du Plessis, especially in a potential five-round contest. While acknowledging Chimaev`s likely aggressive start and pursuit of an early finish, de Ridder believes Du Plessis is a difficult opponent to take down due to his effective movement and footwork, even if his style appears unconventional at times. He stated he doesn`t foresee Chimaev securing a quick submission in the first round.

De Ridder`s prediction hinges on the fight extending beyond the initial minutes. He suggested that if Chimaev fails to secure an early finish, the bout will become increasingly challenging for him. According to de Ridder, Du Plessis`s unpredictable style and powerful hands could make it “a long night” for Chimaev.

He highlighted Du Plessis`s remarkable ability to maintain pressure and explosiveness throughout a fight, even when he looks exhausted. De Ridder believes this relentless and unorthodox nature makes Du Plessis a formidable and hard-to-predict opponent. Ultimately, de Ridder favors Du Plessis to win, though he mentioned a Chimaev victory would also be intriguing.

De Ridder also spoke positively about Du Plessis personally, describing him as a friendly individual. Looking ahead, de Ridder expressed interest in potentially facing either the champion, Du Plessis, or Chimaev in the future, particularly if he achieves a decisive victory over Bo Nickal, which he believes could position him for such opportunities.
