Robert Whittaker has a clear vision for how he wants to conclude his decorated fighting career.
Known as “The Reaper,” Whittaker is currently slated to face Reinier de Ridder in the main event of UFC Abu Dhabi on July 26. This bout represents a significant matchup within the middleweight division, featuring the former UFC champion, Whittaker, against de Ridder, who boasts an impressive 3-0 record since joining the promotion in 2024.
Whittaker recognizes that even if he defeats de Ridder, securing a title shot will likely require several more fights, a reality he is well aware of. During an interview with FOX Sports Australia, Whittaker outlined his ideal retirement scenario.
“Four fights,” Whittaker stated, revealing his projected timeline. “I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I want to compete four more times; that`s my plan. I understand the necessary steps to achieve what I want. Four fights should position me for that title shot, allowing me to potentially finish my career on top and secure that `fairy tale ending.` I`m actively working towards it.”
While Whittaker has faced setbacks against the division`s top contenders recently, he has also successfully navigated past several aspiring fighters looking to make a name by defeating him. Before his loss to Khamzat Chimaev, Whittaker secured back-to-back victories over Ikram Aliskerov and Paulo Costa. His recent run includes a 6-3 record with wins against notable opponents such as Marvin Vettori, Kelvin Gastelum, Jared Cannonier, and Darren Till.
Khamzat Chimaev is scheduled to challenge current champion Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319 on August 16. This matchup features the two fighters who have most recently defeated Whittaker. Whittaker expressed eagerness for rematches against both men but acknowledged the growing list of contenders he needs to overcome first.
“The list is getting too long now,” Whittaker remarked with a laugh. “I`m putting in the work. Reinier is currently my focus.”
In his loss to Chimaev, Whittaker sustained a significant injury when a choke hold resulted in his teeth being displaced.
Despite the quick conclusion of that particular fight, Whittaker is not discouraged, feeling he did not get the opportunity to fully showcase his abilities.
“He was just better than me on that specific day,” Whittaker admitted. “While I could attempt to make numerous excuses, the truth is I have the loss now. All you can really do is return to the gym and get back on track. Because of how the fight unfolded, I haven`t lost much confidence in my particular skill set. I`m not disheartened about my striking ability or my knockout power, so I approach this upcoming fight with a lot of confidence in my capabilities. As demonstrated in my wins against Ikram and Costa before the Chimaev fight, striking is my game. He will likely try to take me down, and I intend to prevent that.”
