Ryan Garcia`s return to the boxing ring proved to be a significant setback. Facing Rolando Romero on Friday night, in his first bout since his suspension following the 2024 Devin Haney fight (originally a win but later changed to a no-contest), Garcia was widely expected to tune up for a potential rematch with Haney. However, Romero had other plans and played the role of spoiler effectively.
Entering the match as a substantial underdog, Romero appeared to be the sharper and more self-assured fighter. He managed to frustrate Garcia for much of the contest and sent “King Ryan” to the canvas with a knockdown in the second round. From that point on, Romero maintained control, landing power shots intermittently and dictating a slower pace. The fight ultimately recorded one of the lowest punch totals ever for a 12-round bout. Romero secured a clear victory via unanimous decision, with scorecards reading 115-112, 115-112, and 118-109.
In a display of good sportsmanship after the fight, Garcia acknowledged Romero`s performance.
“He fought a good fight, caught me early,” Garcia stated. “No excuses. Congratulations to him, he fought a good fight, and that’s that.” Reflecting on the period leading up to the fight, Garcia added, “I just think that whole year took a lot off my body physically and mentally. I’m just happy I made it to the ring and went 12 rounds.”
Romero was gracious in his victory. While his win undoubtedly complicates the path to a Garcia-Haney rematch, Romero himself expressed interest in seeing that fight happen eventually.
“I ain`t even thinking about what`s next,” Romero commented. “I think Devin and Ryan should get their rematch and make a big one.”
Considering Devin Haney`s own less-than-impressive showing in his win against Jose Ramirez earlier on the same night, a rematch between Garcia and Haney might still be a viable option in the future.
