Sergio Perez has announced that he is in discussions with several teams about a possible return to Formula 1 in 2026.
After a challenging season that led to him losing his Red Bull seat at the end of last year, the 35-year-old Mexican driver found himself without a spot on the grid for the first time since his debut in 2011, after participating in 281 races.
Despite a period of relative silence, recent speculation has linked Perez to Cadillac`s new team, which is set to enter Formula 1 next year. Perez has now confirmed that multiple teams have expressed interest in him.
“If I can find a project that truly excites me and motivates me to return, where the team has confidence in me and values my career, my experience, and what I can contribute, it would be a very appealing option to consider,” Perez stated in an interview with the official F1 website.
“That`s why I`ve given myself at least six months to explore all available options and decide on the next step in my career.”
Regarding the interest from teams, Perez added, “There are several very interesting projects on the horizon. I have been approached by a few teams since Abu Dhabi. Now that the season has begun, more opportunities will likely emerge in the coming months.”
“We are in talks with various parties. Once I have a clear picture of all my options, I will make a decision. It`s very clear to me that I will only consider a return if the project is meaningful and something I can genuinely enjoy.”
Perez mentioned that he is encouraged by the interest, especially given the “short memories in F1.” He added, “People are beginning to understand that my position at Red Bull was not the easiest in Formula 1, and I believe I performed exceptionally well overall.”
He was referring to the second driver position at Red Bull, which has already seen another change since his departure.
After Liam Lawson, his initial replacement, struggled in the RB21 during the first two races of the season—failing to advance beyond the first qualifying round in each and scoring no points—Yuki Tsunoda, who has more experience, has been chosen to drive alongside Max Verstappen starting from this weekend`s Japanese Grand Prix.
“Especially last year, I didn’t have the chance to fully demonstrate my abilities as a driver,” Perez further commented. “Now, suddenly, people are realizing just how challenging that car is to handle.”
“When I first joined Red Bull, several talented drivers had difficulties—Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly—and they are both fantastic drivers who struggled.”
“Having spent so much time at Red Bull, it seems everyone forgot how demanding the car is to drive, which made things complicated.”
However, Perez emphasized, “I want to see them succeed,” and regarding Tsunoda, he said, “Yuki possesses the talent, the speed, and importantly, the mental fortitude to handle it.”
“I believe he has the right mindset and attitude to manage it effectively.”
