Toto Wolff Confirms Mercedes Interest in Max Verstappen for 2026

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has confirmed the team`s interest in potentially signing Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing for the 2026 Formula 1 season. Wolff also indicated that he is open to the possibility of having Verstappen race alongside George Russell.

Previously, George Russell had suggested in an interview that the delay in extending his current contract with Mercedes was due to the team pursuing the reigning world champion. Responding to Russell`s remarks, Wolff affirmed that Mercedes is “exploring future possibilities” but reiterated his satisfaction with the current driver lineup, which includes Russell and Kimi Antonelli.

Although Verstappen`s contract with Red Bull runs until 2028, speculation persists about potential clauses that might allow him to leave the team earlier. Wolff acknowledged that “conversations behind closed doors” regarding Verstappen are taking place. However, he stressed that he is not setting specific deadlines for the driver`s decision and is not directly engaged in contract or terms negotiations at this stage.

Wolff characterized the team`s current driver situation as “a bit different” compared to past scenarios.

Wolff Open to Verstappen-Russell Pairing

Regarding the possibility of pairing Verstappen and Russell, despite their history of on-track incidents and verbal exchanges, Wolff stated that he could envision any driver combination. He drew a comparison to managing the intense rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, suggesting that scenario was far more challenging than anything he might face now.

He noted that having strong competitors within the same team presents both advantages and disadvantages.

Russell More Likely at Mercedes Than Verstappen?

Later, Wolff slightly moderated his comments, suggesting that George Russell is currently a more likely candidate for a Mercedes seat in 2026, and the prospect of signing Verstappen remains “unrealistic” for now.

He also refuted the notion of “delayed” contract talks with Russell, explaining that discussions are proceeding according to a predetermined schedule agreed upon by both parties. Wolff emphasized that the team`s exploration of future driver options, including a four-time world champion like Verstappen, does not impact the timeline for finalizing Russell`s contract.
