Ariane da Silva drew considerable attention at the official UFC 316 weigh-ins on Friday, though unfortunately, it was for failing to make weight.

The seasoned flyweight fighter weighed in at 132 pounds, significantly over the 125-pound non-title limit (which permits a one-pound allowance) for her scheduled bout against Wang Cong. Wang Cong, conversely, successfully hit the 125-pound mark.

Sources with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed that despite the weight miss, the fight between da Silva and Wang Cong is still set to proceed as a catchweight contest. As a consequence of missing weight, da Silva will forfeit 30 percent of her fight purse as a penalty.

Wang Cong addressed the situation herself through an Instagram video, expressing understanding and sympathy for da Silva.

The news was much more positive concerning the two main championship fights headlining Saturday`s event. All four competitors vying for bantamweight titles successfully made weight.

Men`s champion Merab Dvalishvili weighed in slightly under the limit at 134 pounds, while challenger Sean O’Malley registered precisely 135 pounds for their championship rematch. Dvalishvili captured the title by defeating O’Malley at UFC 306 and recently defended it against Umar Nurmagomedov this past January. That victory extended Dvalishvili`s impressive winning streak to 12 straight fights.

Women`s champion Julianna Peña weighed in at 135 pounds for the first defense of her second title reign. However, considerable focus was on her challenger, Kayla Harrison, who also successfully made the 135-pound weight. Harrison, a two-time PFL tournament champion typically competing at 145 pounds, had never weighed below 136 pounds in her previous 19 professional fights. She reportedly had no difficulty making the cut on Friday morning and is now ready for her inaugural UFC title opportunity.

Apart from Ariane da Silva`s weight issue, every other fighter on the UFC 316 card successfully made their required weight.

UFC 316 is scheduled to take place this Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
