UFC’s Justin Gaethje Swaps Octagon for Fairway at American Century Championship

The transition from the high-impact world of professional fighting to the comparatively serene setting of a golf course is a significant one. UFC lightweight contender Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje, known for his relentless pressure and devastating power inside the octagon, recently traded his fighting gloves for golf clubs, participating in a prominent celebrity sporting event.

Gaethje joined a diverse roster of athletes, entertainers, and public figures at the annual American Century Championship held in scenic Lake Tahoe, Nevada. This tournament, a staple of the celebrity sports calendar, provides a platform for stars from various fields to compete on the golf course.

While Gaethje is accustomed to delivering decisive finishes in his professional sphere, his performance on the links offered a different kind of outcome. Over the course of the three-day competition, the former interim UFC lightweight champion finished tied for 56th place within the field.

The tournament utilized a Modified Stableford scoring system, a format that awards points based on performance relative to par on each hole, rather than simply counting total strokes. In this system, birdies, eagles, and pars earn positive points, while bogeys and worse results can deduct points. Gaethje`s performance saw him maintain a position generally within the lower half of the standings throughout the event.

Competing alongside figures such as golf content creator Hally Leadbetter and World Series champions Kevin Millar and Gary Sheffield, Gaethje found himself in varied company on the leaderboard. His final ranking placed him ahead of several other notable personalities who also participated, including NFL legends Emmitt Smith and Charles Woodson, NBA icon Charles Barkley (a perennial favorite, perhaps ironically, for his golf commentary more than his scores), and comedians Ray Romano and Colin Jost.

The top honors at the American Century Championship ultimately went to 18-season NHL veteran Joe Pavelski, who finished with a commanding lead, followed by MLB pitching great John Smoltz in second place.

For the 36-year-old Gaethje, this temporary shift to the golf course comes during a period as he awaits his next assignment inside the octagon. Following his victory over Rafael Fiziev in March, “The Highlight” has publicly stated his aspiration for a shot at the undisputed UFC lightweight championship.

While the fairways of Lake Tahoe didn`t witness the type of explosive finish fans are accustomed to seeing from him, Gaethje`s participation highlights the diverse interests of top athletes. His time on the golf course provides a brief, albeit different, “highlight reel” moment before his focus undoubtedly returns to the rigorous demands of mixed martial arts and the pursuit of a world title.
