Golfing icons Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have collaborated to introduce a revolutionary experience for sports enthusiasts: TGL, an interactive and technology-driven golf league.
In partnership with the PGA Tour, TGL offers a unique, intimate viewing experience where fans can witness teams of elite golfers competing within a specially designed, high-tech arena.
Here’s a deeper look into TGL:
What is TGL Golf?
Launched in August 2022, TGL is a technologically advanced, 3-on-3 golf league. It features six teams, each composed of four PGA Tour professionals, engaging in two-hour matches at the SoFi Center, TGL`s purpose-built venue in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
What Does TGL Mean?
TGL is short for Tomorrow`s Golf League. The name originates from TMRW Sports, a venture established by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley. TMRW Sports is focused on developing technology-based projects in the sports and entertainment sectors.
How TGL Matches Function?
A TGL match consists of two segments. The first is `Triples,` a nine-hole, 3-on-3, alternate-shot format. The second is `Singles,` featuring head-to-head play over six holes, with each golfer playing two holes.
- The SoFi Center course is equipped with advanced technology and spans approximately 97 yards by 50 yards, roughly the size of a football field.
- Golfers tee off from genuine grass tee boxes, fairways, rough, and sand, aiming at a massive simulation screen over 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator.
- The tech-enhanced green incorporates jacks that alter the slope, creating varied play on each TGL hole.
- Each hole is worth one point. In case of a tie after regulation, an overtime round decides the winner.
- Overtime: TGL’s overtime is similar to a penalty shootout in soccer. Golfers compete head-to-head until one team places two shots closer to the pin than their opponents.
- Shot Clock: Matches include a 40-second shot clock. Players must take their shot within this time; otherwise, their team incurs a one-stroke penalty for a shot clock violation.
- The 40-second limit is based on the USGA`s pace of play recommendations.
- Timeouts: Each team gets four timeouts per match, with two per session. Timeouts from the first session do not carry over. For the team about to play, timeouts can be called anytime before the shot clock expires. The opposing team can call a timeout until the player addresses the ball. Teams cannot call consecutive timeouts on the same shot.
- Referee: A referee is present on the course to enforce TGL rules, with another official monitoring from a booth.
- All golfers wear microphones during matches to enhance fan engagement.
Each TGL event is designed to complement the PGA Tour schedule, as part of their partnership. Weekly matches progress to playoffs, culminating in one team winning the SoFi Cup.
TGL Points System
Mirroring the NHL, TGL uses a points system for regular-season matches. Teams can earn up to two points per match, influencing their SoFi Cup standings.
A win in either regulation or overtime earns two points, while an overtime loss earns one point.
The top four teams proceed to the playoffs, featuring a single-elimination semifinal and a best-of-three championship series.
